Finding the Joy in the Holidays

The holiday season is such a busy time of year! There’s so much to do, so much excitement all around. From a child’s perspective, this season can feel magical—but it can also be overwhelming. Schedules get thrown off, decorations appear in unexpected places, social obligations increase, and new experiences pop up everywhere. It’s no wonder we all need a little break now and then!

While fulfilling family obligations, consider these strategies to help children (and yourself!) truly enjoy the season:

·         Downtime is okay. Let kids (and adults) have space to rest and recharge. Your child might need to retreat to a quiet spot or even grandma’s bedroom for a short break.

·         No need to open every gift at once. Spread the excitement over time.

·         It’s okay to say no. Snuggle on the couch with a good movie (or some Bluey!) instead of overcommitting.

·         Skip over-explaining your life. You don’t need to share every detail with people you rarely see. They don’t live your life, you do.

·         Pick part of something. Maybe your child decorates just a few cookies instead of tackling all the baking and decorating.

·         Take a drive. Enjoy holiday lights and decorations from the comfort and routine of your car.

During this busy season, focus on what truly matters—finding joy in your family and the moments that make you happy. Children grow up fast, and these fleeting years won’t last long. Cherish the little things, and you might just catch your child gazing in wonder at the holiday world—taking it all in at their own pace.

So pause. Sit back. Take it all in. The season will pass in the blink of an eye, but the joy and memories you create together can last a lifetime. And in case no one has told you lately – you’re doing a great job!!

Enjoy the little moments,

Tessa
